Mie Frey Damgaard is a Copenhagen based artist. Her primary material is paper. In 2D in her illustrative work and 3D in her art.
The essence of my work is the humble paper. Fragile ang plane - but with endless possibilities both in terms of function and constructions.
In my process, I split the paper, layer by layer and recreate new and three-dimensional elements. Pages by pages I cut and fold them into firmly compressed, yet sliding, dynamic constructions. The repetition and the layers rise to a new function: a piece of art. The time-consuming processing of the pages can be glimpsed in the infinite number of layers, and you can see glimpses of the paper's former function. The works evoke memories of longer cycles; the ongoing transformations of the materials. From raw materials to objects to trash and finally to a piece of art. The work give an insight into a changing and dynamic world, in which paper and process are continuously challenged, and where the original function of the material is celebrated.
In a modern, and to a large extent, digitized everyday life where everything runs at a high and hectic pace, it is my hope that my work gives the opportunity to forget time for a while. The pieces bear witness of the time it takes me to make them. The meditative repetition found in the process is a free space where thought, calm and reflection are at the center.
I have always had a love for paper and years ago worked as an illustrator. Therefore, magazines and books piled up in my studio. The material was important as I had illustrated the pages - it lay unused. Here the first steps in the development of my art arose, as a bridge between my working methods; worked as a designer and as an artist. It is still essential today that the paper has had a function in the past. In my work, I give used paper new life by processing and staging.
In her work as an illustrator and designer she works with an interest in details of everyday life and common objects. Being a woman, mother, wife, sister and daughter herself is an ongoing source of inspiration.Mie graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven i 2010. Since then she has worked with a wide selection of clients, her own line of illustrated products and with her artistic work.
She has worked with clients such as: Egmont magasiner, Universal Music, Sticks'n'Sushi, Gyldendal, Mejeriforeningen, Ordskælv, University of Copenhagen.
